Prayer And Supplication: The Key To Praying Prayers That Work (according to Scripture!)

Posted in Christianity, Prayer tagged , at 7:14 am by Lisa Ritchey

How do we pray in such a way as to know that it will be answered?  As usual, G-d laid it out for us, you just don’t hear of it very often.  Let’s see what the Word has to say about it and what steps you might be missing.

You must know the Word.

You have to know what the Word (our Christian life instruction manual) says about the situation.  Otherwise you, quite literally, have nothing to stand on.  If you do not know what is promised, you can not claim it.  You can not believe what you are not aware of.

Why?

G-d said that we are to put Him in remembrance of His Word.  This is simply repeating His Word (Rhema or Logos) back to Him.  This is called Supplication.

  • 1Kings 8:38 What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:
  • 1Kings 8:54 And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication[1]  unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.
  • Daniel 9:3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
  • Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
  • Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
  • Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

How do we do it, though?

Is someone sick?  Then quote Isaiah 53:5  “…and with his stripes we are healed.” Or 1 Peter 2:24  “… by whose stripes ye were healed.”  or, Psalms 103:2-3 “Bless the LORD, who healeth all thy diseases;”   Is it a financial need?  Try, “Philippians 4:19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”  A wayward child? “Joshua 24:15  “…as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”  See what I mean?  This is supplication.

Why is supplication so important?

It is not for G-d: He already knows the Word.  He wrote it!  Supplication is important for us.  For one thing, it makes sure that you have your facts straight.  There is no reason to wonder or doubt if the Bible says that He will!  Also, faith comes by hearing.[2]  The more you say it, the more you believe it.  This is how we go from hope- it might happen, to belief- it should happen, to faith- Lord, I know this is a done deal and I thank you in advance for it.  Hallelujah!

What happens when we ask and quote the Scriptures back to Him?

1Ki 8:39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

1Ki 8:40 That they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers.

Why?

Isa 55:9-11

(9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(10) For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
(11) So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall[3] accomplish that which I please, and it shall[3] prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Voila, prayer answered!

[1] 1 Kings 8:22-53

[2] Romans 10:17

[3] This is the strongest word in the legal system.  If the judge says, “it shall”, then it absolutely must, it is mandatory.  It is also defined as “will have to”.  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shall
