Teach my hands to war, and my fingers to fight

Posted in Warfare at 3:45 am by Lisa Ritchey

Psalms 144:1  A Psalm of David.

Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:

Yes, this is Old Testament, but we are still at war, people!  If you want some Scripture from the New Testament to back this up, here ya’ go:

Ephesians 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

What does that mean, exactly, though?

 against

Principalities – chief magistrate, power, principality, principle, rule[1],

against

powers – an allowed potentate (one having great power, influence, or effect)[2], token of control, delegated influence,[3]

against

the rulers of the darkness of this world, – Satan (adversary)[4], ruler of darkness of error or an adumbration[5]

against

spiritual (daemoniacally) a spirit[6].

wickedness –depravity, that is, (specifically) malice; plural (concretely) plots, sins:>[7]

in

high- above the sky: – celestial,[8]

places.

So we see that even today we, as the Church, are not dealing with people or things, but with spiritual beings.

What are some of the things we fight against?

  • Sexual perversions These can manifest in many ways
    • Homosexuality
    • Addiction to pornography
    • Uncontrolled sexual desires
    • Unusual sexual desires
  • Addictions
    • Alcohol
    • Drugs
    • Tobacco in any/all forms
    • Sex
    • Food
  • Controlling Spirits
    • “It is my way or else!”
    • “I know the right way to do it!”
    • “No one else knows what they are talking about!  I am right!”
    • “Do this for me, or do it the way I want, and there will be a hot time in the sack tonight!”  OR
    • “Don’t expect anything from me for a long time if you do / don’t!”
  • Religious Spirits
    • These expect everyone to do things a certain way or it isn’t right (they claim Biblically)
    • Set rules to follow and lay down lines not to be crossed
    • Follow rules, don’t have relationship
  • Financial
    • Debt/lack – always more month than money
    • Greed – have enough, but always want more
    • Selfishness – gives, but grudgingly
  • Lust –  cannot be happy without it
  • Jealousy – “I can’t believe they got that when I have waited so long for one!”

The Bible puts it this way in Galatians 5:19-21:

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;

  • Adultery, –  a (male) paramour; figuratively apostate: – adulterer[9]
  • Fornicationharlotry (including adultery and incest); figuratively idolatry [10],
  • Uncleanness–  impurity (the quality), physically or morally: – uncleanness.[11] ,
  • lasciviousness – filthy, lasciviousness, wantonness[12],
  • Idolatry –  image worship (literally or figuratively)[13],
  • Witchcraft – medication (“pharmacy”), that is, (by extension) magic (literal or figurative): – sorcery, witchcraft[14],
  •  hatred – hostility; by implication a reason for opposition: – enmity, hatred[15],
  • Variance – a quarrel, that is, (by implication) wrangling: – contention, debate, strife, variance[16],
  • Emulations – properly heat, that is, (figuratively) “zeal” (in a favorable sense, ardor; in an unfavorable one, jealousy, as of a husband [figuratively of God], or an enemy, malice): – emulation, envy (-ing), fervent mind, indignation, jealousy, zeal.[17],
  • Wrath – passion (as if breathing hard): – fierceness, indignation, wrath[18],
  • Strife – Of uncertain affinity; a quarrel, that is, (by implication) wrangling: – contention, debate, strife, variance.[19],
  • Seditions – disunion, that is, (figuratively) dissension: – division, sedition[20],
  • Heresies – disunion, heresy [which is the Greekord itself], sect[21],
  • Envyings – ill will (as detraction), that is, jealousy (spite): – envy.[22],
  • Murders – murder, + be slain with, slaughter.[23],
  • Drunkenness –  intoxication: – drunkenness[24] ,
  • Revellings –  a carousal (as if a letting loose): – revelling, rioting.[25],

and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Also in James 3:14

But if ye have

  • bitter envying– bitter jealousy, malice[26]  and
  •  strife– faction, to stimulate to anger[27]

in your hearts, glory (rejoice against)[28] not, and lie not against the truth.

 Why?

James 3:15,16

(15)  This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is

  • Earthlyworldly[29],
  • Sensualnatural or that which is the lower or bestial nature[30],
  • Devilishdaemon like: – devilish[31].

(16)  For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

  • Confusion– instability, that is, disorder: – commotion, confusion, tumult[32] and
  • every evil work“foul” or “flawy”, that is, (figuratively) wicked: – evil.

So, how do we do this warfare?

  1. First, put your armour on:

Ephesians 6:10-18

(10)  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

(11)  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

(12)  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

(13)  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

(14)  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

(15)  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

(16)  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

(17)  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

(18)  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

How do we do this, though?

  • (14)  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth:  Know the Bible, and listen to the Holy Spirit[33]
  • ( 14)  and having on the breastplate of righteousness: Knowing  that because of the sweet, shed blood of Jesus, I stand in right standing, without fault before a most Holy G-d.
  • (15)  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace:[34] Keep your peace, no matter what.  Strife provides the enemy an opportunity.
  • (16)  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
  • (17)  And take the helmet of salvation,: We have total control of our thoughts, and it is up to us what thoughts we allow to be completed, and which ones we “cut off at the knee” by changing thoughts mid-thought.[35]
  • (17) and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:[36]
  • (18)  Praying always with all prayer
  • (18)  and supplication: petition[37]; quoting His Word back to Him[38]
  • (18)  in the Spirit: Having the carnal thoughts and desires denied (crucified) to the point that the Holy Spirit is the first voice we hear, and the one we follow.[39]
  1. James 4:7  Submit (to subordinate; reflexively to obey: – be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto.)[40] yourselves therefore to God.  Resist (to stand against, that is, oppose: – resist, withstand.)[41] the devil(a traducer; specifically Satan)[42], and he will flee from you.

Game over, victory won!

So if we fight the good fight, what do we get?

 Psalms 144:10, 12-15

10 It is He that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

12  That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:

13  That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:

14  That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.

15  Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.
